I often lament over the fact that we have very limited culinary diversity in Fort Collins. Most of our dining choices consist of Mexican, Tex-Mex, Burgers, and Pizza. However, we’ve seen a recent surge in Mediterranean and Middle-Eastern dining options over the summer, and I couldn’t be happier about it. It is high time we break the cycle of “typical” and live to experience some more unique foods.

At the end of this past July, Fort Collins was the first US city to gain a Shawermize it – a fast-casual Middle-Eastern restaurant. The other, and original, location is in Jordan. Since their growth from opening in Jordan in 2008 was so successful, owner Bilal Etoum decided to take a gamble on Fort Collins placing their second location on Elizabeth in Campus West next to Starbucks and Fuzzy’s Taco Shop. Why? Of all of the cities in the US – Fort Collins? I’m not completely sure, but I wouldn’t doubt that CSU has something to do with it. Whatever the case, I think it was a fantastic decision, and we lucked out on gaining something amazingly delicious.We are so lucky, in fact, they are getting ready to set up their second Fort Collins location in Front Range Village later this year.

The primary dish at Shawermize it is shawerma – a sandwich/burrito-like wrap filled with shaved meat. The meat is roasted and seasoned on a spit, just like the gyro meat we are all very familiar with. Shawerma is a very popular and common fast food option in the Middle East and around Europe. It’s great that we are getting a chance to enjoy it outside of the Americanized gyro…
