I was pretty geared up to see this one!  After seeing Jeff Bridges as Bad Blake in "Crazy Heart" last year, I was ready for the next big film of the genre. However...

I can tell you a couple of things about "Country Strong":

  • If you like Gwyneth Paltrow- you should see this movie!
  • If you're looking for a feel-good kind of flick, you should pass.

The movie, about lots of different things, focuses mainly on Gwyneth's character- ""Kelly Canter": A veteran Country star going through rehab, until her husband-manager (Tim McGraw) takes her out too soon- to get her back on the road and back on track career wise.

Going on the road with them is "Beau" (Garrett Hedlund)- Kelly's 'confidant' from the rehab center; and up and coming pageant queen/singer "Chiles" (Leighton Meester).

Things go from not-good to pretty bad on the road for Kelly. If you're looking for a movie with strong country morals, that's where the movie starts to lose ground. Kelly is a train wreck emotionally and making compromises and decisions that she shouldn't be taking.  Her husband isn't doing much better- as he and Kelly are still grieving after a personal loss the year prior.

Tim McGraw's performance was pretty good- he had a complex character and did well!

Lightening the mood of the movie is the relationship between Beau and Chiles- a mix between young love and adversaries, they look like they had a lot of fun with their roles in the film.

There is really great concert segment toward the end- where Kelly just tears up the stage- a great performance from Gynneth Paltrow I thought.  Almost worth going to see the movie for that concert!

Almost.

And that bird!? What?

I give "Country Strong' 2 stars out of 5.

Did you see it? What did you think?
