President Obama has granted 10 States, including Colorado, waivers from “No Child Left Behind” education requirements, a policy from the George W. Bush administration that requires all students to have proficient reading and math skills by 2014.

According to the Associated Press, the waiver comes with the condition that states promise to improve how students are prepared and evaluated, include college and career preparation, and reward high-performing schools while giving extra help to schools that don’t perform as well.

(President Obama) said action was necessary because Congress failed to update the law despite widespread bipartisan agreement that it needs fixing. Republicans have charged that by granting waivers, Obama was overreaching his authority.
