Colorado Congressmen Give Shutdown Salary to Charity

Colorado’s members of congress are donating about $7,700 in salaries that they collected during the 16-day partial government shutdown to charities. Another is donating his to the U.S. Treasury. Congressmen typically make $174,000 a year.

Senator Michael Bennet is donating his shutdown pay to the Weld County Food Bank, and Representative Cory Gardner is donating part of his salary to the food bank and the rest to other charities in his district. Representative Mike Coffman is giving his to the Red Cross and Representative Jared Polis will give his shutdown portion back to the federal government for debt relief.

The full story in the Denver Post also names politicians who did not forgo their salaries. That list includes Senator Mark Udall and Representatives Diana DeGette and Ed Perlmutter.
