Colorado 4-H Teams Compete in National Dairy Judging Contests

Colorado 4-H Dairy Judging teams recently competed at two national level contests.

National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest - Madison, Wisconsin

The first team, comprised of Brandon Kerbs, Gill; Brianna McBride, Severance; Wade Hofmeister, Fort Morgan; and Bryanna Andersen, Mead, competed at the National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest in Madison, Wisconsin.  The contest was held on October 3rd in conjunction with the 50th Annual World Dairy Expo.

• 115 individuals representing 29 teams from the U.S. and Canada, competed
• Colorado placed 6th overall, and was 8th overall in oral reasons, 3rd in the Holstein division and 5th in the Jersey division.
• Bryanna Andersen received All-American honors for her 7th high individual finish.
• Brianna McBride won high individual in the Holstein division.

All-American Invitational Youth Dairy Cattle Judging Contest - Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

The second team, which featured Awna Hirsch, Eaton; Kendawl Gartrell, Eaton; and Megan Podtburg, Greeley, competed at the All American Invitational Youth Dairy Cattle Judging Contest.  This contest was on September 19th in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

• 56 individuals from 15 teams competed.
• Awna Hirsch was 5th high individual overall
• The Colorado team finished 12th overall.

Both teams were coached by Keith Maxey, Weld County Extension Agent, Greeley; Debbie Carpio, Kersey; and Sarah Hirsch, Eaton. The contests require participants to place ten classes of dairy cattle, representing five different dairy breeds, and present five sets of oral reasons (four in Harrisburg).  Each placing class and each set of reasons is worth up to 50 points.
