If I'm not helping our Veterans personally, I'm helping others who go out of their way to help our Veterans. Jeremey Heid, with Honker Down for Wounded Warriors, is one of them.

I was introduced to Jeremy Heid last year through Rod and Karen Steely with Colorado Crude Carries. Karen had told me about this amazing individual, an outdoorsy type, who was using his knowledge and resources by volunteering many hours through Field of Dreams. Their mission is to get special needs kids, the children of our fallen soldiers and our nation's veterans (especially those wounded in combat) into the field on hunting, fishing and outdoors activities. It was while doing his work with Field of Dreams that he knew he had to something like it right here in Colorado and thus, the Honker Down event was born.

The Christopher Birdwell Memorial Honker Down for Wounded Veterans event is now in it's third year. The event is named in honor of a local Windsor, Colorado hero who was Killed in Action - Afghanistan, August of 2012.

Jeremy, who does a lot of work within the Field of Dreams program, wanted to do something for our local heroes who have given so much. The event is designed to give back more than we can ever imagine. With the divorce and suicide rate very high with our Veterans, not just the disabled Veterans, this was a way to get some of them back together to share stories and get some of that comradeship back in their lives and to perhaps heal in their own way; with their brothers in arms.

The Christopher Birdwell Memorial Honker Down for Wounded Veterans event this year will be held from 23 January to 25 January 2015 and includes 12 heroes this year.

Good luck to the Geese!

However, these events cost money and the need for everything from cash, to ammo, to gear etc. is always needed and this is where you and I can help. Here are some of the needs:

  • Cash - If you would like to make a cash donation, please click here for the Field of Dreams website. Make sure to reference Christopher Birdwell or make a note in the provided space that you would like your contribution to go toward Honker Down for Wounded Veterans.
  • Land Donors - The requests for hunting throughout the waterfowl season are pouring in. Honker Down works closely with each of the land donors to make sure their property is used respectfully and lightly. Honker Down is also putting together other hunts such as deer, elk, turkeys, coyotes and fishing.
  • Gear - Caps, gloves, beanies, sweatshirts, t-shirts, ammo, goose and duck calls, lanyards, gift certificates, etc. Basically, anything you can hunt or fish with get put into gear bags for the Veterans the event comes in contact with.
  • Ammo - The event provides all shotgun shells. Each veteran needs a minimum of two boxes, more if they can't shoot worth a darn; or feel sorry for the geese and miss on purpose! 12 gauge shells only, 3 or 3 1/2 inch BB shotgun shells. MUST be Steel Loads!
  • Air Mattresses and Cots - You can't have enough! These warriors seem to pop or break one or two a year, I won't go into their late night/early morning shenanigans. These guys sleep in a heated shop so these come in handy.
  • Decoys - Lots of decoys needed and they aren't cheap. If everyone reading this today donated just one decoy, they would have enough.

I think the biggest request though is the need for a new, or used trailer, to haul all the hunting gear, etc. for Field of Dreams and Honker Down events right here in Colorado.

My hope is that someone reading this today will have a contact, or a huge heart, and donate one to this more than worthy cause.

Jeremy, Field of Dreams and Honker Down currently host no less than 3 deer hunts, in addition to this waterfowl hunt in Colorado every year. Having a trailer at their disposal is vital to their operation and a great sponsor opportunity for someone. Anyone who contributes $500 or more toward this trailer will receive their company logo on the trailer.

Field of Dreams is a 501c3 so all donations/contribution are tax deductible! For more information, questions or to donate, please contact Jeremy Heid directly at bigcreekpro@gmail.com or just click here.
