After nearly two years of planning and fundraising, a project to construct an all-abilities playground in Cheyenne is finally a reality.

City officials and community members gathered at Cahill Park this (Wednesday) morning to break ground on phase one of the inclusive playground.

"What we are funding now is the entry plaza, two picnic shelter areas and the playground itself with the play features," said Cheyenne Parks and Recreation Senior Planner Teresa Moore.

"We have some adult fitness pods, the outside crusher fine loop with the educational components and an outdoor classroom which is not funded," Moore added.

The $1.24 million project, which is being themed around Cheyenne's transportation history, is being entirely funded through donations and grants.

"The work is not over yet," said Monica Puente with the Friendship Playground Fund. "To get to 100 percent design and build-out we need to raise $300,000 more."

"This was designed to be built in phases, but we're hoping that the dollars come in and that we can just complete the whole vision," said Moore.

Moore says with successful fundraising, the entire project could be completed by next summer.
