In 2000, Congress passed legislation which was eventually signed into law funding the Veterans History Project. The VHP chronicles an individuals military history, as a matter of record.

On January 12, I wrote an article about a video series I wanted to do documenting our local veteran. Today, February 5, a friend of mine who had no idea I wanted to do this project, out of the blue, sent me a link to the Veterans History Project.

The VHP has been around since 2000 and it's basically an archive full of military veterans dating back to World War 1, from every branch of the military, recounting their military history; conflicts they served in, combat experience, injuries sustained, prisoner of war and reflections on their service once they got out or retired.

Basically, exactly what I wanted to do in a video series that will be seen on our K99 YouTube channel.

However, I will now be sending on these projects to the Mile High Region of the American Red Cross who is assisting the Library of Congress with the Veterans History Project of the American Folklife Center.

It is my hope that you have a veteran in mind that will want to participate in this amazing and wonderful piece of history for future generations to see and hear about. Without all the men and women who contribute to this project, our military history and legacy will never survive and make known the true realities of war and what it meant to our veterans.

If you would like to submit a veteran, or perhaps your a veteran reading this right now and would like to record your story, as a matter of record in the Library of Congress, I will do the work and submit everything for your story to be heard by anyone wanting to hear it from all across the world. To be eligible, you must be in one of the following groups:

  • World War II
  • Korean War
  • Vietnam War
  • Persian Gulf War
  • Afghanistan and Iriaq conflicts from 2001 to the present

Send your submissions to Charley Barnes at 600 Main St., Windsor, Colorado or email charley@k99.com. (You can also click here to send a direct email) I will then be in touch to set up an interview time and place which should take no more than about an hour.
