Colorado is considering many different ways to relieve traffic on Interstate 70.

One of them occurs when the weather is really bad. Or, if you see things through the viewpoint of a skier or snowboarder, when the weather is really good. I'm talking about snow.

Once already this ski season, CDOT put chain laws and tire restrictions in effect for all vehicles on the road. That meant if you were to be in a crash or were pulled over for any reason, you could be cited for not having the proper amount of tread on your tires.

This 'sometimes' provision may become a regular thing as the Colorado State House is grappling with whether or not to institute standards concerning vehicle tire condition from November to May.

Traffic accidents, not necessarily volume, are often the culprits in causing the hellacious backups that I-70 between Summit County and Denver is known for. If these are caused by people driving with too little tread on their tires, they could have to pay fines.

How can you tell if you have enough tread? Do the quarter test, demonstrated in the video above.
