World Elephant Day brings awareness to the horrible threats and situations that this species experiences, such as poaching, habitat loss, and mistreatment in captivity, and asks the public to do what they can to help protect these beautiful and magnificent creatures around the world.

It is absolutely heartbreaking to me that these enormous beauties are being slaughtered by illegal, greedy poachers for the sole reason of collecting their ivory tusks and making a quick buck. Elephants are my favorite animal because they appear to always have a huge smile on their faces, and they are just such gentle giants and so unique. So today, if you get the chance, try to experience elephants in a non-exploitative environment to help the efforts to conserve and protect this animal.

The Global Village Museum of Arts and Culture in Fort Collins is doing their part to celebrate World Elephant Day, by holding a special event this afternoon, August 12. From 3 to 5 p.m., stop by the museum for free tea, and browse art done by local artists, including Kimberly Lavelle, who is an expert at capturing the inner beauty and spirit of animals in her artwork. Some art pieces will be available for purchase. A portion of the proceeds collected from artwork that is sold will be donated to aiding and protecting elephants.

Stephanie Flanders Martin of Lavender Elephant Health and Wellness will also be present throughout the afternoon fundraiser. During the event, there will also be a silent auction, where all proceeds will be going directly to helping elephant conservation as well. This event is free to the public, and the museum is also offering half-priced admission to all four of their galleries during this time as well.

Do your part to help save the elephants by signing the pledge here.
