Being a broadcaster I am quite familiar with freedom of speech. I have to follow FCC regulations on the air but off mic I am free to say whatever I want right? Yes I can, but that does not protect me from anything. I think there can be a bit of a misconception on the freedom of speech.

I had a situation just the other day the dealt with this. I had put a post on Facebook about Tim Tebow, which always gets both viewpoints actively talking. I had one friend post a statement that said “no bashing, I am just using my freedom of speech”. I am sorry but it doesn’t work that way. We all have the right to say what we want but that does not protect you from others using their freedom of speech to let you know what they think about what you said. You cannot exercise your freedom and expect others not to use theirs.

The majority is not always right and it takes a strong person to stand on the other side. One of the biggest examples of this is the Dixie Chicks. They had the right to say what they wanted years ago and people had the right to say what they thought about it. It doesn’t always work out the way you want it to but you have the right to say it.

Speak your mind and say it loud, believe in it and be prepared to defend it.
