A man was shot by Greeley Police Department officers early Monday morning after tasers failed to detain the suspect.

Greeley officers responded for a second time on a report of a suspicious, intoxicated male causing a disturbance in the 1300 block of 16th Avenue at 2:16 a.m. Monday.

During the previous call, officers were unable to locate the suspect when he fled the scene. On the second call, officers arrived and located the male in the residence and engaged the suspect in an attempt to arrest him.

Tasers involved in trying to place the suspect into custody were reportedly ineffective; preliminary indications are that the suspect then advanced on officers with a weapon and was shot.

The suspect was transported to North Colorado Medical Center for surgery and remains in critical condition. He may have stabbed himself in the chest while officers were present.

The man has active arrest warrants for felony assault and escape out of the Department of Corrections.

No officers were injured in the incident.

This incident remains under investigation by the 19th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team, whose purpose is to investigate officer-involved shootings and report the facts to the District Attorney.
