Initial reaction to reading the headline of this story is to be angry, and think that the cute bear who was roaming around Fort Collins east of the CSU campus today (July 9) meant no harm. Trouble is, he had his chances, and state wildlife officials felt they had no choice but to euthanize him today.

The 2-year-old, 80-pound black bear was spotted by residents in the area east of College Avenue between Elizabeth and Mulberry streets, while others reported sightings along Spring Creek Trail near Marco's Pizza farther to the south.

This particular bear was relocated to Larimer County from Boulder in May, and was coming into town far too often. Because bears habituated to human-provided food sources, it's tough to get them to go back to natural habitat, and this bear became a repeated threat to public safety.
