National Bike To School Day was on May 8th, but Fort Collins is hosting the USA Pro Challenge on Saturday,  making it the perfect time to inspire students to bike to school. So today (Friday, August 23rd), the day before race day, is this school year’s official Bike to School Day. Children who participate are eligible to receive prizes from the USA Pro Challenge, and a few lucky schools will have a professional bike racer on hand to help welcome the students to school.

Locally, the City’s Safe Routes to School program aims to get at least 50% of local kids walking or biking to school regularly. To encourage more biking and walking, City staff calls for volunteers to launch more “walking school buses” and “bike trains” to safely escort kids to school under adult supervision. Walking school buses and bike trains work the same way as a school bus; adult leaders have a list of kids to pick up and guide safely to and from school.
