Are you an "average Joe or Jane" curious to see and experience firsthand what Larimer County Sheriff's deputies do on a day-to-day basis? Here's your chance.

The LCSO is now accepting applications for the Fall Citizens Academy, which is designed to give an overview of daily Sheriff's Office operations. Academy classes will begin Tuesday, September 13, and run through December 6. All 12 classes are scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. every Tuesday, though, no class is scheduled the week of Thanksgiving.

Classes will cover patrol operations, investigations, crime lab, emergency management and services, SWAT and other special units, and volunteer operations are scheduled. Each class will be presented by deputies and commanders responsible for each area.

Academy students will also get to tour the Larimer County Jail and emergency operations center, a K9 demonstration, and the opportunity to ride along with a deputy. One highlight of the academy is the field day during which students will participate in live scenarios including responding to calls involving live shooting with simulated ammunition, making simulated traffic stops, experiencing the firearms simulator, and processing a mock crime scene.

Only 35 students will be accepted, and spots fill up fast. A $30 fee is required, which covers the cost of a student T-shirt, materials, and lunch served at the field day.

Applicants must be a resident or business owner in Larimer County, at least 18 years of age, have no felony convictions, and no misdemeanor convictions within the last 3 years.
