RELAY FOR LIFE OF WELD COUNTY

12th Annual Relay For Life 2008 in Weld County Information

Please make plans to join K99 at the 12th Annual Relay for Life of Weld County.

WHEN: 6:00 p.m. Friday, June 6 through 10:00 a.m. Saturday June 7, 2008

WHERE: Island Grove Regional Park - The park is reserved for Relay that weekend.

WHY To raise funds for American Cancer Society research and to fund local, regional, and national education and support programs. Each year, ACS is only able to fund about 20% of the research that we would like to fund. So there is a great need for commitment to funding now so that we can find a cure for tomorrow.
Our goal: 6 million less cancer diagnoses and 5 million lives saved by the year 2015.

THEME FOR 2008 Cowbells, Carousels and a Cure!

HISTORY OF WELD COUNTY There were thirteen teams in the first year. In 2007, 190 teams participated and raised a gross total of $410,000. The goal for 2008 is to involve 210 teams and raise $450,000. 654 survivors registered to be part of the event last year. Our goal this year: 700 survivors and their families.

THE ESSENCE OF RELAY Relay is made possible because of the commitment of teams. Teams generally have 10 – 15 members. We have all kinds of teams of all different ages: church or school groups, families, friends and employees teams.

Each team promises to do two things: have at least one member on the track throughout the 16 hours of Relay and to raise money. For example: a team of 10 promises to raise at least $1000.

Each team has a camp site, which they decorate and use during the Relay. There are competitions, activities and entertainment throughout the 16 hours. Some teams have both a campsite and an RV. Some team members stay throughout the 16 hours or they come and go as they are able.

Each team has a sponsor. Area businesses can use this as an opportunity to get to know the Weld County community better. Sponsors do a lot of creative activities at their tent sites and on T-shirts, for example.

Relay is about celebrating the money raised, having fun and also honoring the commitment that we all have.
Relay starts with Victory Laps For Cancer Survivors and one for Survivors and their caregivers at 6p.m Friday.

Luminaria ceremony begins at 9pm. Luminaria are lit at that time. Luminaria can be purchased in honor or memory of those who have had cancer. The bags are placed around the Relay track and it is by the light of those bags that Relay team members walk throughout the night.

WAYS TO GET INVOLVED Get a team together. Volunteer to help organize. Businesses may become a sponsor. Each year we try to have all team money go towards the mission. Sponsorship donations help us keep expenses to a minimum. (last year, expenses were held to 6.4% of the total raised!).
