There are not many details yet, but just after 1:00 this morning a fire was reported at a horse barn in Brighton which has killed 15 horses. Firefighters from Brighton and Hudson fought the fire for more than an hour, but more than a dozen horses trapped inside the barn died.

I know first hand how terrifying it is to wake up in the middle of the night to see your barn on fire. Mine burned down the night of Groundhog Day in 2007. I remember it being very cold with high snowdrifts when I ran outside in stocking feet. I remember the sick feeling of what I might find. I remember making deals with God. I remember sinking to my knees in tears when I saw all my horses huddled together at the far end of the pasture cold, wet and alive.

There are several horse facilities in that area. According to Brighton Fire, it was in the 14,800-block of Powhaton Road at about 1:06 a.m. Fire officials are investigating its cause.
